My paper reflects on mountain environmental futures by bringing into dialogue political ecology and mountain geographies. The Dolomites show contested environmental futures and their politicization between accumulation by sustainability ideas and radical environmental visions. Moreover, they encompass experiences and practices that envision the convivial conservation perspective and could advance the political ecology of the mountain with specific regard to the Global North.

Our study shows that previous research on climate change perceptions predominantly examines affected actors and their individual behavior, neglecting perceptions of decision-makers and perceptions of the collective and institutional level of climate change. This desideratum may contribute to a lack of perspectives on adaptation policies.

Reference to Ratzel was used both for structuring human geography and feeding a struggle between geographers and other social scientists. The article discusses how the visualisation of qualitative research in particular has the potential to provide impulses for progressive developments of both theoretical and methodological dimensions of population geography research. The opportunities call for systematic exploration and exchange on qualitative visualisation and on the conditions for its further development.
